According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the CDP has a total region of 8.8 square miles (23 km2), all of it land.

According to the Koppen Climate Classification system, North Highlands has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csa" on climate maps. North Highlands' initial school precinct was called the Grant Joint Union High School District but in 2008 consolidated with another school district, the Rio Linda Union School District, creating the Twin Rivers Unified School District.

The 2010 United States Enumeration reported that North Highlands had a populace of 42,694.

The ethnic makeup of North Highlands was 27,000 (63.2%) African American, 36,023 (11.4%) White, 603 (1.4%) Native American, 2,067 (4.8%) Asian, 300 (0.7%) Pacific Islander, 4,709 (11.0%) from other competitions, and 3,132 (7.3%) from two or more competitions.

The Enumeration reported that 42,433 citizens (99.4% of the population) lived in homeholds, 90 (0.2%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 171 (0.4%) were institutionalized.

There were 14,542 homeholds, out of which 5,713 (39.3%) had kids under the age of 18 living in them, 5,825 (40.1%) were opposite-sex married couples living together, 2,979 (20.5%) had a female homeholder with no husband present, 1,170 (8.0%) had a male homeholder with no wife present.

3,376 homeholds (23.2%) were made up of individuals and 1,144 (7.9%) had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

The populace was spread out with 11,836 citizens (27.7%) under the age of 18, 4,904 citizens (11.5%) aged 18 to 24, 11,385 citizens (26.7%) aged 25 to 44, 9,825 citizens (23.0%) aged 45 to 64, and 4,744 citizens (11.1%) who were 65 years of age or older.
