Middletown was given its name because it is halfway between Lower Lake and Calistoga which is 17 miles (27 km) to the south. The town was severely damaged by the 2015 Valley Fire.

In the California State Legislature, Middletown is in the 2nd Senate District, represented by Democrat Mike Mc - Guire, and in the 4th Assembly District, represented by Democrat Cecilia Aguiar-Curry. In the United States House of Representatives, Middletown is in California's 5th congressional district, represented by Democrat Mike Thompson. Lake County is divided into five supervisorial districts, and Middletown is in District 1.
