Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Coarsegold, California Coarsegold is a census-designated place in Madera County, California. The populace was 1,840 at the 2010 census. The Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians, a federally recognized tribe, is headquartered in Coarsegold. Coarsegold has previously had a several names, including Coarse Gold, Gold Gulch, Michaels, Oro Grosso, Texas Flat, and Coarse Gold Gulch. The place was first called Texas Flat after miners from Texas identified gold there in 1849. By 1874, the name had changed to Michaels, honoring Charles Michaels, a small-town merchant. A rival quarrying camp inhabited by Mexicans there was called Oro Grosso. The current name derives from the California Gold Rush of the mid-19th century, when prospectors identified coarse nuggets of gold in a close-by creek. At one time, a several dozen gold mines directed in the area.
The Coarse Gold Gulch postal service opened in 1878, changed the name to Goldgulch in 1895 and to Coarsegold in 1899. Coarsegold has a Mediterranean climate (Csa as stated to the Koppen climate classification system) with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Its average annual rain is 27.29 in (693 mm). It is positioned in hardiness zone 8b. The 2010 United States Enumeration reported that Coarsegold had a populace of 1,840.
